ECVS 'make a film in an evening' night!
ECVS members met in the clubrooms and attempted to film all the material for a short film in a single evening. The footage was later assembled into the finished film, which we called REWIND (click here to view).

ECVS Announces Budgie Cup (Still Photography) Competition 2013
Entries are now being accepted for the 2013 Budgie Cup Competition! The Budgie Cup competition is open to all current ECVS members. The competition will be held on the 15th February in the ECVS club rooms, closing date for entries is the 1st of February 2013. Entries are accepted in all reasonable formats. The ECVS 75th Anniversary film gets it's first public showing!
At this evenings meeting the 75th Anniversary film, celebrating the history of the society, and the developments in film making over the years, received it's first public showing. ECVS Announces Choice of the Clubs Competition 2012/13!

ECVS Annual General Meeting 2012
The 2012 Annual General Meeting of Edinburgh Cine and Video Society will be held on Thursday 26th April 2012 in the ECVS Clubrooms at 7:30pm. The outgoing President will give his yearly report, as will our Treasurer. We will also elect new office bearers for next season, and an important motion to consider changing the name of the society will be voted upon. All ECVS members are invited to attend.

ECVS compete in The Bridges Competition 2012
The meeting for the Bridges Trophy Competition with Dunfermline Camcorder Club took place on Wednesday 4th April at the Glen Pavilion Pittencrieff Park, Dunfermline. ECVS are proud to report that despite a sterling effort from Dunfermline, we retained the trophy!

Pilgrim Trust Award
The entries for this years Pilgrim Trust Competition were viewed, and were followed by a video from this year’s judge, Susan Moore, who gave her comments on the films and also announced this years winner - "Different Tracks" by Robert Letham. Robert was awarded the Trophy and a personalised Quaich.

Film-Making Evening
On Thursday 22nd March 2012, E.C.V.S held a ‘Make a Film in an Evening’ night. Three very short (under 1 minute) films were created, however the main aim of the evening was to promote team-building and to allow us to learn from our mistakes! The produced films were "Nuts!", "Thrift!", and "Opening Hours".

Visiting Speakers
On Thursday 29th February 2012, ECVS members were treated to a visit from John Willams and his friend Nick. John is in charge of all the recording etc, and broadcasting for the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, and gave an entertaining and fascinating insight into professional videography.

Choice of The Clubs Competition
The result of this years Choice of the Clubs Competition was announced in the ECVS clubrooms on 23rd February, after the ECVS viewing (and voting) had taken place. We are pleased to announce that ECVS won the trophy this year, with our entry “The Duel” by Alan Brown.

Budgie Cup Competition 2012
The Budgie Cup Competition 2012 was held in the ECVS clubrooms. This year's judge, Toby Sigouin, commented on the high standard of entries this year, and awarded several Highly Commended Awards as well as selecting an overall winner.

Chromakey Night

Underwater Filming
Victor Young showed members a selection of his underwater films, and brought in the specialised equipment which he uses to make them. There was even the opportunity for members to try some of his diving kit on for size!

Bridges Trophy Competition
The 2011 Bridges Trophy competition was held in the ECVS clubrooms on 7th April 2011. The judge of this years competition was Mr Ian Rintoul. We are pleased to announce that this year ECVS reclaimed the trophy!

ECVS Annual Competition
The 2011 ECVS Annual Competition was held over two evenings, Thursday 10th and Friday 11th March. A selection of all the entries were shown over the two nights, and audience members were able to vote for their favourites. This years judges, Pat Menmuir and Daphne Barbieri, attended on the Friday eveing and gave their comments on this years entries, as well as announcing their chosen winners. Many thanks to this years judges for all their hard work, and to all those members who entered films into the competition. The results of this years competition can be found here.

Choice of The Clubs Competition
The final round of the 'Choice of the Clubs' competition was held in the ECVS clubrooms on the 24th February (with a repeat viewing on the 25th), and was well attended with guests Sloan & Joy Bell coming all the way from Belfast. It was to be a good night for their club as their entry, Transport Rhyme & Reason won the competition. Unfortunately they were not presented with the winner's shield as it has gone missing in the post and ironically, is believed to be somewhere in the Belfast Sorting Office. UPDATE: The Trophy has now been located and is on it's way to the competition winners!

Tips and Tricks
In a change to our published programme, Bob Bell presented his evening on Tips and Tricks of Film-making, which had unfortunately been post-poned from last year. Bob brought along a wonderful array of devices which he had created to enable him to get tricky shots, and showed the audience how anyone can make various devices when on a budget. We also heard about some of the pitfalls of film-making and how to avoid/correct them.

Norman Presents
After the recent spate of bad weather, club members were glad to return to attend a very interesting evening presented by Dr Norman Speirs. Norman presented a selection of films produced outwith the club, to enable a frank and open discussion on the techniques used, and the good and bad points of each film - safe in the knowledge that no-one would be offended! This proved to be an excellent learning experience and another very worthwhile evening from Norman.

ECVS CHRISTMAS PARTY CANCELLED
Due to the adverse weather, we regretfully took the decision to cancel the ECVS Christmas Party that was planned for 17th December. It is intended that we will have an alternative social event sometime in the New Year. The next meeting of ECVS will be on Thursday 6th January.

Bad Weather closes ECVS!
Due to the unprecedented bad weather we have had over the past fortnight, we have been forced to cancel several ECVS Meetings. ECVS intend to recommence meetings on Thursday 16th December, with our 5-minute film night, on the subject "History", followed by our Christmas Party on Friday 17th December. Tickets for the Christmas Party will be available on the door (£3), however in order that we get a rough idea of numbers, please let us know if you will be attending. The "Tips and Tricks" evening by Bob Bell, which was unfortunately cancelled on 2nd December, will now take place on Thursday 13th January.

ECVS Announces Pilgrim Trust Competition 2011
ECVS announces that the 2011 Pilgrim Trust Competition will be taking place at the Edinburgh Cine & Video Society clubrooms on the 31st March 2011. The cut off date for submissions is the 25th February, 2011.
The Pilgrim Trust Competition is open to any filmmaker on a Scottish subject or theme, the film does not necessary require to be made in Scotland but can be about a Scottish event or an achievement of a Scotsman abroad.

Technology Update

Pilgrim Trust Competition 2010
Ten entries were received for this years Pilgrim Trust Competition. Our judge this year was Derek Mathieson FACI, who has been involved in film making for 51 years. All the entries were screened in the clubrooms, and this years winning film was announced at the end of the evening.

Several members films were submitted for viewing, all on the subject of 'Recollections'. Of particular note was a film provided by Norman Spiers, originally filmed on cine film cataloging life on Orkney in the 1970s.

ECVS Annual Competition 2010
The 2010 Annual Competition took place in the ECVS clubrooms. This years judge had watched the entries previously, and awarded various trophies (this years results), however all entries were shown to club members over these two evenings to allow an audience vote to award the President's and Vice President's Trophies.

Bridges Trophy 2010
The 2010 Bridges Trophy was held in Dunfermline. Both Dunfermline Camcorder Club and ECVS prepared 40 minute film programmes, which were then shown and judged by Brian Saberton. This years winners were Dunfermline!

ECVS Open Night
Edinburgh Cine and Video Society threw open their doors to neighbours and invited them to an Open Night. Visitors were able to wander round the premises in Fettes Row, where club members were on hand to meet and greet them, show them round and answer any questions.

2010 Choice of the Clubs Competition Results
The final round of judging for the Choice of the Clubs Competition took place in the ECVS Clubrooms. The votes for each entry were counted from each club taking part, and the winner was announced! You can see this years full results here.

2010 Budgie Cup Competition Results
Judging for the 2010 Budgie Cup Competition took place in the ECVS Clubrooms. This years judge was Dr Tom Gardner of Edinburgh Photographic Society who judged the 58 entries from club members, before announcing the winner. In the second half of the evening Dr Gardner presented a fascinating selection of his own photographs, which were of an extremely high standard.

ECVS Open Night - 4th March 2010
ECVS announces their forthcoming OPEN NIGHT on 4th March 2010. The evening (starting at 7:30pm) will be a drop-in event, where members of the public can visit the ECVS clubrooms and see some examples of our work, and our facilities. Live demonstrations of blue-screen (chromakey) effects and cine to video transfer will take place throughout the evening. A flyer has been produced to publicise the event.

Student Films
Students from the AV/Media course at Stevenson College, Edinburgh visited ECVS and screened their Social Videography projects. ECVS members voted on these films and awarded certificates to those judged the best of the evening.

Editing Software Review
Sean Groat presented an evening on video editing, concentrating mainly on the use of Pinacle Studio. Examples of several different features were demonstrated and comparisons made with other available software.

Films from an Outside Club
Sean Groat presented a showreel from Orkney Movie Group, which consisted of a selection of six films. ECVS members enjoyed the evening and many commented on the very high production values apparent in the film selection.

Special Effects
Sean Groat and Alan Brown gave a presentation on the history and development of special effects in film making. Examples of various techniques were shown and discussed, including some special effects created by club members.

Camera Workshop
Jim Closs, Bob Bell, Stewart Emm and Peter Dick gave ECVS members a tour of a variety of video cameras, microphones and other technology, to suit a range of budgets, and pointed out the pros and cons of each. A question and answer session followed.

Presidents Night 2009
The new ECVS 2009/2010 session opened with Presidents Night. This years ECVS President, Sean Groat, showed a selection of films on both the Thursday and Friday evenings, which were very well received. Plenty of food and drink was also laid on, and members old and new had the opportunity to catch up with each other following the summer break.

Bridges Trophy
Members of Dunfermline Camcorder Club visited ECVS for the Bridges Trophy Competition. Each club presented a 45 minute showreel of members films and an independent judge awarded the trophy to their favourite selection. ECVS successfully retained the trophy!

Annual Competition
The ECVS Annual competition entries were shown to members, with judges comments and overall results. Members voted for films on both nights to determine the winners of the Vice President's Prize and the Frank Walker Salver, which will be announced on Awards Night (24th April 2009).

Practical Animation
Jim Closs and Alan Brown gave a brief introduction to Animation Techniques, using plasticene models. Having discussed the theory, club members then created their own models and used them to create a short animated sequence.

DVD Workshop
Alan Brown gave a demonstration of the DVD Authoring tool 'Ulead DVD Workshop 2' - the demo showed how to create simple one-film DVDs and advanced to complicated multi-film/multi-menu animated DVDs. The demonstration was followed by an interesting question and answer discussion session.

Student Project Videos
Alan Taylor and Sean Groat organised the showing of a number of films produced by students of local Colleges and Universities. The evening was well attended and provided an interesting insight into the techniques and skills of local young film-makers.

Editing Technique II
Club members re-visited the footage from a previous evening (Editing Technique I - 27th November 2008) and took a look at three different edits of the same footage, produced by different film-makers.

Video from Stills
Jim Closs presented a very interesting evening on the techniques he used to produce video from still images. While many film-makers use stills in their films, one must be careful to prevent the finished film turning into a slide-show. Jim showed the club the methods he used to capture high quality images, and then how to introduce movement into these images to create dynamic and interesting footage.

An accompanying tutorial will shortly be included in the March 2009 issue of Cine-Chat, and also made available via this website.

Films from an outside club - Potters Bar
A selection of films were shown from Potters Bar Cine and Video Society, who had kindly provided ECVS with a full 2-hour programme. The films shown were "A Slice of Madeira" by John Astin, "The Falkirk Wheel" by Phil Elmer, "Down Under in England" by Christine Collins, "Rhapsody in Blue" by John Parkes, "Dune 7" by Andrew Tweed, "Show of Remembrance" by John Astin, "Peaceful End" by PBCVS members. After a short interval, we watched "Smoke Without Fire" by John Astin, "I Can See Clearly" by John Parkes, "White Knuckle Ride" by June Redgrove, "Flame Lily" by Daphne Brown, "Boobies" by Andrew Tweed, "Illusions of Infirmity" by John Aston, and "The Way Forward" by Triangle Productions. All films were of a very high standard, and all those who attended agreed it was a most informative and enjoyable evening.

Making Of A One Minute Film
On the 4th December 2008, ECVS members attended a hands-on film making session, the aim being to create a one-minute film in the space of an evening. "Thermos" is the result of their efforts.

Editing Technique I
Alan Brown gave a historical background to the art of film-making, showing the 1903 silent film "The Great Train Robbery", Sean Groat then showed two films, one produced by himself, and one produced by Alan Taylor, which used footage of the same event, to illustrate how different editing techniques could result in quite different films. ECVS members were then invited to take part in a hands-on film editing exercise, using pre-prepared computer-generated clips. We hope to revisit this subject on 29th February 2009, where we will watch the different films produced from these clips.

Breaking the Silence
This is a documentary film made by ECVS members, Bob Bell, Drew Fleming, Norman Speirs and John Clark, and relates to the history of the Georgian Bells originally installed in the church of St Andrew's and St George's at 13 George Street, Edinburgh.  The eight bells , made at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London rang weekly, from 1788 to 1903, until silenced due to safety reasons. After being refurbished, re-tuned and the steeple area strengthened the bells were re- installed in 2006.

Cine to Video Transfer
Over the last few years many request on how to carry out a transfer from 8 and super 8 film stock into a video format suitable for recording on DVD have been made. On the 8th November there will be a demonstration of how to carry this process out and optimise the quality of the transferred images and recording on DVD.

The Scottish Association of Moviemakers (SAM) welcomes ECVS and IAC members to a showing of Willy Van Der Linden films on Sunday, 7th October, 2007 at the Tolbooth, Jail Wynd, Stirling. Further information is available from the IAC website.
